C5 were asked to construct a model of an Anderson Shelter. Children were encouraged to be creative with their choice of recycled materials.
People were told to build shelters in their houses and gardens so they could protect themselves during air raids. One of the most popular was the Anderson shelter.
These were made from corrugated iron sheets and dug half way into the ground. They were then covered with earth and soil.
Although the Anderson shelters kept people safe they weren’t very comfortable and were not good for sleeping as the sound of the bombs could still be heard.
