PERSONAL, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
In PSE we discuss how we are unique and how we celebrate people’s differences. We support the children in making friends and sharing with each other.
We develop the childrens’ communication skills through a range of role play areas that are linked with our topic and the childrens’ own interest. Previous role plays have included: a beach café, spy base and a mechanics. We explore the language of the similarity and difference through PSE, UW, R.E., Maths and Literacy.
We teach and support the children with both their fine and gross motor skills. Outside we practice our balance and spacial awareness. We have lessons on Scooter safety, den building, tennis and football. We learn lots of playground games to keep us active and busy at lunch times. Inside the classroom the focus is on fine motor control and using one handed implements like pencils, paintbrushes and scissors safely and effectively.
Through class and small group work the children study the following text types:-
Non– Fiction — Making posters, non-fiction writing, recounts, labels
Fiction – stories from other countries, wrote own stories based on familiar texts,
Rhyme and alliteration — and a range of poems and rhymes
In the Foundation Stage our teaching of Mathematics has a strong emphasis on Mathematical language. This vocabulary is key to their understanding of the number system and how to solve practical problems. We tackle problem solving, using a knowledge of time, calculating, doubling and halving, measuring and handling data.
KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING
We study the world around us. We look at our immediate environment and what we like about it. We celebrate lots of different festivals will also be looking at children who live in a range of different places and talk about how their life is the same and different. We spend time outside and explore our garden – planting in the spring and harvesting in the winter. We cook and look at changes that happen to materials.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS & DESIGN
In this curriculum area we learn to dance, make music, perform drama and create art work. We use role play for the drama and do an annual Christmas production. We use the music room to explore lots of different instruments. We explore colour mixing and use lots of different types of media to create beautiful pieces of art to display.
We use our smart boards and computers on a daily basis to give the children access to a variety of games and activities. We introduce the school iPads to the children. The year 6 children help support the reception children to investigate a drawing app.
This year the children will also learn:
– Mouse control
– Naming the parts of a computer
– To use age appropriate software
– To understand that you can retrieve information from computers.
We learn about some different special times (Ramadan) and other periods of fasting (Lent) that take place around the world. We take time to think about why people fast and what it makes them think of.
Books and Stories
We will be learning about books that are special to different people and sharing a range of stories from these books.
The children have been very fortunate to receive weekly music lessons by our music teacher, Philippa Burch. They have explored percussion instruments and have learnt many new songs, which have supported our topic work.
