Curriculum Coverage
Pupils in Years 1&2 have covered the following topics. Attainment will vary according to the age and ability of your child.
LITERACY
We have studied and enjoyed a variety of genres including:
- Stories
- Instructions
- Reports
- Recounts
- Persuasive writing
- Poetry
- Explanations
All children have explored the text type and have planned and produced their own work.
NUMERACY
Key stage 1 and 2 children work in sets which are differentiated according to ability.
Under the new curriculum numeracy will be taught within the following the strands.
- Number and place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions
- Measurement
- Geometry (properties of shape)
- Geometry (position and direction)
- Statistics (Additionally for KS2)

HISTORY
Our topics this year have been:
- Changes in the home
- The Great Fire of London
Children have been encouraged to use a range of sources of information to find out about historical events and figures. They have also developed their sense of chronology by making comparisons between past and present. The children really enjoyed their ’Victorian Wash Day’ at St Albans Museum and their drama workshop exploring The Great Fire of London.
COMPUTING
Children will have access to laptops and iPads to develop a range of computing skills covering; Digital Literacy, Information Technology and Computer Science:
- Creating and following algorithms
- Programming physical and virtual toys
- Creating and manipulating digital text
- Creating simple animations
- Personal information and staying safe online
RE
We have learnt about and reflected on:
- Harvest
- Festivals of light
- Belonging
- Easter
- Books and stories
- Celebrations
GEOGRAPHY
Children have developed their geographical skills through our ‘Habitats’ topic.
The children studied different habitats in our local area and in other countries. They also explored how habitats are different and how they are similar and how this affects what lives and grows there.
PE
Children have acquired and developed skills in gym, dance, games, swimming and athletics. The children also enjoyed taking part in sports day and National Schools Sports Weeks.
ART
Children studied the shapes and lines that make up distinctive buildings. They then had the chance to develop their own skills of mark making through using different media to sketch cityscapes.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
Children have used their ideas to plan, make and evaluate hand puppets and minibeast magnets. As classes they also planned and built junk model dinosaurs for Red Nose Day! The children also enjoyed a visit from a puppeteer.
PHSE
We have focused on the themes:
- New beginnings
- Getting on and falling out
- Going for goals
- Relationships
- Changes
MUSIC
We have enjoyed using our voices and a variety of instruments to explore pitch, tempo and pulse. All the children performed fantastically in the Christmas play and Year 2 took part in Harpenden Music Festival.
